Lee publishes on defense attorneys and the guilty plea process

Research on Defense Attorneys and Guilty Plea Process

Jacqueline Lee, associate professor and interim research director in the School of Public Service, has published a paper exploring the influence of defense attorney characteristics on the guilty plea process.

The study, co-authored with two others, utilized artificial intelligence-generated photos of attorneys, which were randomly shown to survey participants. These participants then rated the attorneys' appearance and quality through various measures.

Contrary to the researchers' initial expectations, Black and female attorneys were rated more highly than white and male attorneys.

Furthermore, participants who were randomized to Black and female attorneys were more likely to accept a plea offer.

Author's summary: Jacqueline Lee explores defense attorneys' influence on the guilty plea process.
