A massive copyright settlement involving artificial intelligence and books has authors choosing between a payday and a legal fight.
The Anthropic copyright settlement totals $1.5 billion, but some argue it’s not enough. Authors whose books are listed in a database are entitled to around $3,000 per stolen work.
Colorado authors, including Peter Heller and Camille Dungy, are among those affected by the settlement. Their books were allegedly used to train the AI tool Claude, which was developed by Anthropic.
Anthropic has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
