John The Baptist Community School suffered a 0-24 to 0-15 defeat to the holders Thurles CBS in the Dr Harty Cup opener in Dundrum on Wednesday afternoon.
The first half was tight, keeping the Limerick school in contention until three late points doubled the winners' lead. After the break, John the Baptist had a goal chance that could have bridged the gap, but Thurles moved into a match-winning lead going into the final quarter.
Outstanding individual performances came from Cillian Minogue and Darragh Hickey for Thurles, and Riain McNamara and Shane O'Dea for John the Baptist. However, the greater depth of talent in the Thurles lineup proved to be the difference.
