Community members and organizations in Boone County attended the Boone County Youth Substance Use Prevention Coalition in Columbia on Wednesday, marking the first kickoff meeting for the coalition.
The youth coalition is an ongoing effort to really get people together to work to prevent substance use disorders, or what we call addiction.
According to Health Program Coordinator Heather Harlan, the coalition will focus on addressing the root causes of substance use, including mental health, trauma, environmental factors, and marketing products towards children.
The younger the person is, when they begin using any substance, any potentially addicted substance, the much more likely they are to have problems with it.
