On Tuesday, October 14, flights at Kelowna International Airport (YLW) and Victoria International Airport (YYJ) experienced delays due to a cyber security incident.
The incident began around 5 p.m. and involved the hacking of public address systems and screens, displaying pro-Hamas messages throughout the airports.
"The YLW team has successfully removed the unauthorized messaging,"
According to a post on Kelowna Reddit, the messaging lasted for about two minutes and included phrases such as "Free Palestine" and curses directed at the U.S.
The City of Kelowna stated that the incident was limited to a cloud-based third-party software provider.
Airport authorities worked to restore the flight information display screens and the PA system, with the YLW team successfully removing the unauthorized messages by 7 p.m.
