A home invasion incident from his childhood has fueled Mal Lanyon's passion for policing.
At 14, Lanyon skipped school and returned home to find a stranger in overalls inside his house. The man claimed to be there to paint the house, but Lanyon was skeptical.
"I asked what he was doing here and he said 'I'm here to paint the house', and I said 'no, mum would have told me',"
The man fled when Lanyon threatened to call his mother. This incident inspired Lanyon to become a police officer, driven by a desire to prevent others from experiencing similar trauma.
"I decided I didn't want that to happen to anyone,"
As the newly appointed NSW Police Commissioner, Lanyon remains committed to working with the community to reduce crime.
