A man entered the Monastery of Silence, where he met Brother John, who had been living a peaceful life under the guidance of the Chief Priest.
Brother, this is a silent monastery, you are welcome here as long as you like, but you may not speak until I direct you to do so.
Brother John lived in the monastery for a full year before the Chief Priest allowed him to speak two words: "Hard Bed." The Chief Priest apologized and promised to get him a better bed.
The next year, Brother John was allowed to say another two words: "Cold Food." The Chief Priest assured him that the food would be improved.
On his third anniversary, the Chief Priest called Brother John into his office, allowing him to say two words again: "I'm done," but instead the Chief Priest said: "It is probably best," and criticized Brother John for complaining throughout his stay.
