NYC Marathon Course to Ban Unsanctioned Cyclists

City transportation officials have announced a ban on unsanctioned cyclists during the NYC Marathon to ensure safety and accessibility.

The New York City Department of Transportation announced the ban in an email to run club leaders, citing that street closures before the race are only for emergency vehicles, event setup crews, and medical tents.

For decades, cyclists have used the 26.2-mile course for early morning rides before sunrise, taking advantage of empty streets. However, with rare exceptions like the Five Boro Bike Tour and Summer Streets, such "street takeovers" are now prohibited.

Street closures in the hours before the race are meant for emergency vehicles, crews setting up for the event and medical tents.

The ban will be enforced on November 2, the day of the NYC Marathon.
