The FDA Withholds Names of Drugs Made in Contaminated Factories
For decades, the FDA has redacted drug names from reports, but several former officials now support ending this practice.
Disturbing discoveries were made at several factories manufacturing drugs for the US, including:
- pigeons infesting a storage room and defecating on boxes of sterilized equipment at an Indian factory
- pathogens contaminating purified water used to produce drugs at another factory
- stagnant urine pooling on a bathroom floor near where injectable medication was made at a third factory
Despite these findings, the FDA has chosen to keep the names of the affected medications secret from the public by blacking them out of inspection reports.
The agency's decision undermines its mission to protect Americans from dangerous drugs.
