WhatsApp now allows users to protect their end-to-end encrypted chat backups with passkeys, making it easier to access them in case of a lost or damaged phone.
Previously, users had to remember a 64-digit string of letters and numbers to unlock their encrypted backups. With passkey support, users can now access their chat backups from any device using their fingerprint, screen lock, or Face ID.
WhatsApp has been testing the passkey feature and is now available for all users.
To set up passkey backups, users can tap on the profile icon on Android or the Settings tab on iOS.
