‘Constitutional fidgeting’: Why has Ghana been so fortunate? - Graphic Online

Constitutional Fidgeting in Africa

Some African countries have been modifying or eliminating presidential term limits, allowing leaders to extend their stays in office. Paul Biya has won an eighth presidential term in Cameroon, while Alassane Ouattara has won a fourth presidential term in Côte d’Ivoire.

Yoweri Museveni will seek a seventh presidential term in Uganda's 2026 elections. These extended stays have been made possible by "constitutional fidgeting" with term limits.

As of 2024, 14 African countries have modified or eliminated presidential term limits, including the aforementioned countries. These countries have a common history of political entrenchment by leaders post-independence.

Author's summary: Ghana's fortune is attributed to its lack of "constitutional fidgeting".
