President Donald Trump has announced plans to import 80,000 metric tons of Argentina beef, aiming to reduce beef prices.
Lesley Robinson, president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association, expressed concerns about the decision, stating:
Mainly across the board in feeling the same sentiment that we just would like the president to not intervene in our domestic beef market.
Despite this, Robinson remains supportive of President Trump and appreciates Montana's congressional delegation for publicly condemning the news.
Eric Belasco, a professor at Montana State University's agricultural economics department, notes that imports can moderately lower prices, but emphasizes that the US beef market is primarily driven by domestic production, which meets 80-90% of consumer demand.
