Red meat sector weathers United States tariffs for now

Red Meat Sector Remains Resilient to US Tariffs

New Zealand's red meat exports have seen a significant increase in value, despite the imposition of US tariffs. According to the Meat Industry Association, exports reached $713 million in September, a 29% increase from the same period in 2024.

The value of overall exports for the third quarter of 2025 was $2.27 billion, 20% higher than the same quarter in 2024. The three major markets, including the US, China, and the EU, all saw an increase in value, with the US up 25% to $175m, China up 26% to $131m, and the EU up 35% to $116m.

“September is the first month where our sector might have seen a material impact on red meat exports to the US,”

said Sirma Karapeeva, chief executive of the Meat Industry Association. However, at this stage, the US tariffs do not appear to be having a significant impact on exports.
