His victory means much more. The author recalls arriving in New York City at 21 and being amazed by the city's diversity.
The presence of halal food carts, bismillah etched onto them, and Egyptian vendors blasting DIY music from Cairo were a revelation.
Coming from mid-Missouri, the author was struck by the Brooklyn mosques playing the adhan out loud and people reading the Quran on the subway.
The author marveled at their ability to walk down the street in a hijab without turning a head, realizing an American city could be Muslim.
This victory is a celebration of New York's diversity and inclusivity.
