Ian Fogarty, a Nassau County police officer from Sayville, was recognized for heroically rescuing two teenagers caught in a riptide at Cupsogue Beach County Park on July 16.
While visiting the park with his wife, Kirsten, and their three children, Fogarty noticed eight boys swimming offshore. Two 16-year-olds were caught about 100 yards out in a strong current. Without hesitation, Fogarty, off duty and armed only with a boogie board, swam out and aided them back to safety.
“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,” recalled Fogarty, 38.
For his quick thinking and bravery, the Nassau County Legislature honored Fogarty for his “selfless valor” and named him the “Top Cop” for September.
Fogarty’s wife, Kristen, and their children—Killian, Sawyer, and Briggs—are proud of his courageous actions that day.
