Exploris Was on Track for Growth Before Canceled Charter

Philippe Videau, president of Exploris Expeditions & Cruises, spoke with the French maritime outlet Mer et Marine about the recent liquidation of the company. After being placed under administration in early October, the French cruise line will officially end its operations later this week.

“In 2024, we generated 11 million euros in revenue with 1,100 passengers, and in 2025, we were on track to reach nearly 20 million euros and almost 2,000 passengers,” Videau said, noting a 17 percent rise in Antarctica.

Exploris began operations in late 2023 with the vessel Exploris One, built in 1989 and acquired from Silversea. According to Videau, the company had a challenging initial year but was showing strong signs of growth in 2025.

For 2026 and the following years, Exploris had been negotiating charter agreements intended to secure consistent revenue streams. Videau explained that the company planned to operate the ship for just over half the year through charters to maintain a stable financial base and reassure its investors and lenders.

“Strategically, the tactic was to operate the ship for slightly more than half the year through chartering, which provided a solid financial foundation, allowing us to reassure everyone, starting with our bankers, and to work on our pricing and increasing our profitability, as well as our new ship project,” he said.

The company had also signed multi-year agreements with partners in the United States to strengthen its commercial network and ensure continued development.
