9 Missing After UPS Plane Crash in Louisville

At least 12 people died when a UPS cargo plane exploded during takeoff from Louisville's main airport. Local officials confirmed that nine others are still unaccounted for.

“Our hope is that we have located all of the victims at this point. But again, we do not know,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg at a press conference. “You hear people say, ‘Oh, you only see that in the movies.’ This was worse than the movies.”

Emergency teams continued to search the wreckage on Thursday, covering half a mile of debris scattered by the explosion. The local coroner’s office is identifying the dead, including the three crew members who were aboard the aircraft.

“There’s so much charred, mangled metal that not all the bodies may have been located until you look underneath certain things,” Greenberg explained. “Everything to date has been just looking at what can be seen without moving debris.”

UPS Flight 2976 was departing the company’s global hub, UPS Worldport, shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday when its left engine detached, triggering a massive fireball. The burning plane crossed the airport perimeter fence before crashing through nearby businesses and parking areas. Officials expect recovery efforts to continue for several more days due to the wide impact zone.
