Why resident says intersection in Birmingham neighborhood is ‘an accident waiting to happen’

Dangerous Intersection Concerns in Birmingham Neighborhood

Families living near the intersection of Eton and Sheffield in Birmingham express concerns about the safety of crossing the street. They report that drivers frequently ignore stop signs, creating hazardous conditions.

Resident Concerns on Traffic Behavior

Kimberly, a local resident, described the four-way stop near Woodward and West 14 Mile as “an accident waiting to happen.” She highlighted that speeding and failing to stop at signs endangers children and families in the area.

“I try to avoid this intersection if I can, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it. We have a lot of people walking their dogs, putting their strollers, jogging and biking. People are flying through the intersection and they’re not paying any attention to people around them.”

Observations from Local 4

On a weekday morning, Local 4 visited the intersection to assess the situation. While no speeding was observed, drivers were seen performing slow rolls through the stop signs instead of stopping completely.

Speed Limits and Resident Experiences

The posted speed limit in the area is 25 mph, but residents claim many drivers exceed this limit. Tim, Kimberly's husband, shared his experience:

“When I’m driving along here, most people are driving much faster than that. I’ve been passed on Eaton in the residential area doing 25. They’re very dangerous.”

Kimberly added that crossing the street at this intersection causes her anxiety, especially since she and her family frequently walk around the neighborhood.

“I’m paranoid when I have to cross here. We walk the neighborhood a lot and it scares me.”

Calls for Safety Improvements

The couple believes implementing changes could enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.
