IAG taps Starlink to power inflight Wi-Fi for 500-plus aircraft - Runway Girl

IAG Partners with Starlink for Inflight Wi-Fi on 500+ Aircraft

International Airlines Group (IAG) has reached an agreement to equip its airlines—Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL, and Vueling—with SpaceX's Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite-powered inflight connectivity. The service is expected to launch next year.

Scope and Implementation

This partnership will replace multiple existing inflight connectivity (IFC) providers across IAG’s fleet. The Starlink system will be installed on more than 500 aircraft, covering short-haul flights within Europe and all of IAG's long-haul transatlantic and global routes.

“The new high speed Wi-Fi partnership with Starlink will be implemented on more than 500 aircraft across IAG’s airlines covering short-haul journeys in Europe as well as all the Group’s long-haul transatlantic and global routes.”

“This means that IAG’s fleet is on track to include more aircraft with high-speed Wi-Fi than any other European airline group.”

Fleet and Financial Details

Starlink’s phased array system will be installed on all IAG aircraft except those planned for near-term retirement. The financial terms of this extensive deal have not been disclosed.

British Airways Customer Offering

British Airways has announced that the gate-to-gate Wi-Fi service will be complimentary for all passengers on its mainline and Euroflyer fleets as the new systems are fitted.

British Airways states the Wi-Fi will be offered to “all customers” free of charge once the installation is complete.

Author’s summary: IAG’s partnership with Starlink will bring high-speed, satellite-based Wi-Fi to over 500 aircraft, making it the European leader in inflight connectivity with complimentary service on British Airways flights.
