India is the second country, after the U.S., to receive Gemini-powered navigation on Google Maps. This update introduces AI-driven features such as hands-free assistance, contextual suggestions, and detailed place information.
Miriam Daniel, vice president and head of Google Maps, emphasized the importance of localization for the Indian market during a virtual briefing:
“When we say localizing for India, it’s not just the language. It’s also adapting to how Indians use the product, how Indians will talk, how they will ask for questions, how they will identify places, the geopolitical places, the street names, you know, everything is sort of different in India.”
Gemini will be made available to all Android and iOS users in India in the next few weeks. At launch, it will support nine Indian languages, enhancing accessibility and user experience.
These enhancements aim to make navigation safer and more intuitive for Indian users by leveraging AI technology and local insights.
Summary: Google Maps' Gemini AI integration in India brings localized, multilingual support and targeted safety alerts to improve navigation and commuter safety across key regions.
