Top Workplaces 2025: The Midwest Companies Cultivate Growth and Consensus

The Midwest Companies is ranked 39th among small employers on the Chicago Tribune’s list of Top Workplaces, according to the consultancy Energage in Exton, Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1969 on a 5-acre plot, the family-owned business has expanded to 700 acres of nursery facilities located in St. Charles and Virgil, Illinois, and Glenn, Michigan. The company grows and distributes plants to landscape architects and other professionals through Midwest Groundcovers.

More recently, the business added Midwest Trading Horticultural Supplies, which produces and sells soil to other nurseries and horticulture operations. Both operate under The Midwest Companies umbrella, established by Peter Orum and his wife, Irma.

Today, the company is managed by Peter’s daughter, Christa Orum-Keller, and her husband, Craig.

Employee and Community Impact

At the nurseries, employees care for shrubs, flowers, and other plants used in landscaping projects across the Midwest. Their plants have helped beautify parks and buildings around Chicago, including Millennium Park’s Lurie Garden.

“For Orum-Keller, defining the company culture is vital to having a successful business and ensuring they find the best employees for the job.”

The company’s strong roots and emphasis on culture have supported its ongoing growth and reputation in the region.

Summary: The Midwest Companies leverages decades of family tradition and a strong culture to grow its horticultural business and maintain high workplace standards.
