Jacob Elordi reflected on the viral bathtub scene from Saltburn and criticized the internet's “prudish” response. Despite the film being released nearly two years ago, the scene remains widely discussed.
During the Entertainment Weekly “Awardist” podcast on November 6, 28-year-old Elordi shared his perspective on the scene, in which his character, Felix Catton, masturbates in a bathtub. Afterward, Barry Keoghan’s character, Oliver Quick, enters the tub and drinks the leftover bathwater, even licking the drain.
“I actually think it shows me just how, I guess, prudish we are,” Elordi said.
He expressed frustration over the reaction, noting the difference between the scene's reception and more extreme content found in other cinematic works.
Elordi pointed out the prevalence of intense and disturbing content in crime documentaries, which are among the most streamed remakes on various platforms.
“There’s more alarming things in the top 10 streamed remakes of crime documentaries on every streaming platform,” he stated. “I think that’s much more alarming, the kind of horrible joy that we all get from watching children be mutilated. That’s what was interesting to me.”
The bathtub scene led to the creation of a line of candles billed as smelling like “Jacob Elordi’s Bathwater.” Elordi also mentioned he felt “really excited” when reading the script by writer and director Emerald Fennell for the first time.
Jacob Elordi criticizes the prudish reaction to a provocative bathtub scene in Saltburn, highlighting society’s contrasting tolerance for more extreme and disturbing media content.
