Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian convicted sex offender, has been apprehended and returned to HMP Wandsworth after nearly a week on the run. Police conducted a two-day manhunt for him following his mistaken release from prison.
Kaddour-Cherif was accidentally freed on October 29 due to a mistake in the prison’s computer system. Officials confused his custodial sentence for possessing a knife with a suspended sentence. Alongside this, he is registered as a sex offender and was previously convicted of indecent exposure on November 24. For that crime, he received a community order and was placed on the sex offenders' registry for five years.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest happened on the morning of November 7 in Finsbury Park, north London, after a member of the public spotted him in Blackhorse Lane, Islington. Officers quickly responded and detained him.
"Officers have arrested Brahim Kaddour Cherif who was released in error from HMP Wandsworth on 29 October. Cherif was spotted by a member of the public in Blackhorse Lane, Islington just before 11.30am. Officers responded immediately and he was arrested."
Video footage from the arrest shows a police officer identifying Kaddour-Cherif by his "distinctive wonky nose," despite the man denying his identity, saying, "I am not Brahim."
This case highlights the risks of administrative errors in prisons and the swift police response that led to the re-capture of a dangerous offender within days of escape.
