Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is temporarily stepping away from the Buffalo Sabres to handle a personal matter in Sweden. The team has expressed full support during this difficult time.
During the offseason, Dahlin's fiancée, Carolina, experienced severe heart failure while they were vacationing in France. She required multiple CPR interventions and was hospitalized on life support for several weeks before undergoing a heart transplant in France.
"This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives, however it is something that we have learned so much from," Dahlin wrote. "We will continue to grow from these experiences and are so grateful for all the love and support we have received. We are truly blessed in so many ways and fully realize how fortunate we are."
"We share all this with you in hopes that we can all appreciate our experiences, the people closest to us, and the importance of fully living each day."
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said, "He said everything is OK," and confirmed there is no set timeframe for Dahlin's return. Ruff added, "I think it's been incredibly hard," acknowledging the emotional challenge Dahlin faces.
Rasmus Dahlin is on leave from the Sabres to support his fiancée after her severe heart condition and transplant, with the team offering full backing during this challenging period.
