Director Joseph Kosinski is in early talks to cast Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in his upcoming big-screen reboot of Miami Vice. Speaking at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, where he presented to the “F1” sound team, Kosinski shared why the two actors would be perfect for their roles.
“Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him. Austin, I think, is proving himself as someone to watch. Again, I’ve just really admired his choices,” Kosinski said. “If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
The film is confirmed to take place in 1985, highlighting the distinct period aesthetics. Kosinski teased, “It’s full on,” regarding the film’s period looks.
Miami Vice is produced by Universal Pictures, with a release date planned for August. The reboot draws inspiration from the original 1980s TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, focusing on undercover detectives in South Florida.
The reboot “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking."
Kosinski is also known for directing the summer hits F1 and Top Gun: Maverick.
