Two years later, Maxim's mother received a kidney transplant, but the struggle didn't end there. Maxim inherited Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) from his mother, sparking his obsession to find a cure.
About one in seven Americans has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), with approximately 10% of those cases due to a genetic condition.
Maxim was convinced that gene therapy could reverse PKD, but the challenge lay in delivering the drugs directly to the diseased cells.
