European Drug Gangs' Unconventional Strategy
Some European drug gangs have resorted to burying cocaine instead of selling it due to plummeting wholesale prices across the continent.
In December, authorities in southwest Spain discovered two shipping containers buried underground, containing seven metric tons of cocaine valued at approximately 420 million euros.
- Civil guard officials tracked the cargo from the mouth of the Guadalquivir River to a farm in Coria del Río, near Seville.
- The farm was protected by armed guards, indicating a high level of organization and security.
One of the cocaine bricks featured a devil emoji playing the guitar, a distinctive marking.
OCCRP reports that this incident is part of a larger trend in 2025, where drug smugglers are attempting to manipulate the market due to low wholesale prices.
