BBC Radio 2 host Sara Cox has launched a 135-mile challenge across the North East to raise money for Children in Need. The ambitious journey spans five marathons in five days through four counties — County Durham, North Yorkshire, Northumberland and West Yorkshire.
The adventure, called the "Great Northern Marathon Challenge," began today, November 10, in Kielder Forest and will conclude on Friday, November 14, in Pudsey, Leeds. Throughout the journey, Cox will travel by jogging, running, and walking while carrying a Pudsey Bear backpack, the iconic mascot of the charity.
“When they picked me to get Pudsey to Pudsey, I was honoured and horrified in equal measure. We’re talking 135 miles of hills, moors and blisters – but I am ready for the challenge, and I will absolutely be giving it everything I’ve got.”
“I know the brilliant Radio 2 listeners will be with me every step of the way, and their encouragement and support will shove me up every incline and pull me through my toughest moments.”
Pudsey Bear, the symbol of Children in Need, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Cox said she cannot think of a better way to mark the milestone than by helping raise essential funds for children and young people who need it most.
