A powerful explosion near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening resulted in at least eight fatalities and destroyed several vehicles, according to Delhi Police, who confirmed the incident to CNBC-TV18.
The blast, believed to have come from a parked car around 6:52 pm, caused a massive fire spreading rapidly across the vicinity. The Delhi Fire Service deployed at least seven fire tenders to control the flames. Authorities have cordoned off the area while forensic teams investigate the cause, with early indications pointing to a possible CNG cylinder explosion.
FSL Officer Mohamad Wahid stated, “The samples will be taken to the laboratory, and after that, only we can make any confirmation… Everything will be known after the examination…”
A high alert has been issued throughout Delhi. Following the explosions near Lal Quila, Himachal Pradesh Police released guidelines urging vigilance. People are advised to immediately contact the nearest police station or call emergency number 112 if they notice suspicious objects, unattended bags, or vehicles.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the victims at LNJP Hospital, offering support and monitoring the situation closely.
